Re: POTA on 30M?

I gave my reasons why I think they are contests.

What are the reasons you don't think they're contests?

Is it just because you say they're not contests?

Is there a notice from the FCC that they're exempt?

Re: POTA on 30M?

The way I see it: 1) Do you have to register to participate? Its a contest 2) Are there rules you have to follow? Its a contest 3) Do you have to submit logs in AIDF format? Its a contest 4) Do you get awards based on your "score"? Its a contest The only difference I see is POTA never ends!

Re: What QRP Rigs do you have, and how do you use them?

I have the Heathkit HW-7 and HW-9 that get used very little. I have MFJ QRP rigs for 40, 30 and 20 meters. The 20 and 30 rigs get used a few times each summer. The 40m rig is my desktop rig at home. And I have the original LNR MTR-3b. This is the main rig when I go out to the park at least once or t...

Re: POTA & FT8 Data

Welcome to retirement and ham radio! Both are great fun and I wish I had started both sooner than I did. If you're in the US, one thing to consider is you can use CW on the 80, 40, 15 and 10 meter HF bands with just the Technician license. For the digital modes, you'll need the next higher General l...

Re: Random wire antenna

Great synopsis on the random wire antenna, Andrew! One thing I would add, for people finding this having no previous experience with random wires, is that this antenna requires a "tuner", or matching device. Many radios have one built-in these days, but many others don't. Random wires are ...

Re: My portable setup

The antenna isn' quite a exact match when I use it on 20, 15 and 10 meters. The tuning capacitor lets me dial it in.

Re: My portable setup

I tried counterpoises with the matcher, but never noticed any difference. The wire is is cut for 40m with knots at the 30 and 20 meter resonant points. The ears on the winder lets me lock the wire at any point. The 40m length also works well on 20 and 10. Im just using 8 AA nimh battteries that give...

My portable setup

I dont do any of the xxOTA or SKCC stuff, but I do enjoy taking a radio to the park, walking or biking to get there. That means keeping everything small and light. I started back in the 90s with a Heathkit HW-7, then upgraded to the MFJ QRP rigs. My last upgrade was to the original LNR MTR-3b. What ...
