Re: RF "in the shack" with Random Wire 9:1 Unun

an almost "classic" setup which I tried (several times) is the following a 34ft antenna wire, connected to a 9:1 UnUn, the feedpoint (unun) of the antenna raised to 29ft, a counterpoise made of insulated wire dropping down (for 29ft) to ground, at that point the counterpoise wire is connec...

Re: RF "in the shack" with Random Wire 9:1 Unun

Has anyone had "RF in the shack" issue with trying to operate digital modes using a Random Wire antenna? I'm using a QRPguys 9:1 unun with a counterpoise and 3ft of coax between radio and antenna, operating at 5watts. Using the cable included with my digirig I get errors on transmit, they...

Do you have some link/document/info about such a "feature" ?

Re: HF propagation

Since I discovered the RBN and POTA, I often look to see where a station is reaching before running upstairs to attempt a qso. Similarly, when I’m attempting an activation, I check to see how my signal is doing. I have noticed that most stations that report hearing me (and others in my general area...

Re: Why so few "random" wire antennas ?

Hi Andrew, I understand. For multi-band antennas, I have been working with linked EFHWs to extend resonant capabilities to other bands. They trade off time for raising and lowering the antenna to manipulate links against access to more bands. You might be interested in the Frequency Agile Antennas ...

Re: Why so few "random" wire antennas ?

Hi Andrew, I can only speak for myself, but I have and use both 9:1 random wire and 49:1 EFHW antennas. I prefer using resonant antennas (EFHWs or dipoles) for radios without a tuner to avoid carrying extra kit. I love the random wire with my KX2, because it has an excellent built-in tuner. The 9:1...

Why so few "random" wire antennas ?

Reading around, it sounds like a lot of SOTA folks, either use verticals (and I can understand that, due to low takeoff angle) or EFHW, and in the second case, folks often complain about "not being able to get on air on band X due to the antenna..."; now... why such a "refusal" f...
