72 instead of 73?

Hi all,
I’ve noticed that Tom, K4SWL sends 72 instead of 73 at the end of a QSO in his videos.
Is this a USA thing?
I’m in Australia and I’ve not heard anyone use “72”…
Cheers

That's a thing people are trying to get started. I did it myself for awhile, but since I seemed to be the only one I felt awkward and stopped. If others are picking it up now, I may start again.

Some folks are using 72 as a way to indicate they are operating QRP.

Actually using 72 instead of 73 has been around for decades, it's not something new. For QRP operators such as myself, I always sign with 72 instead of 73 when I'm operating at QRP power. Do not feel awkward doing it, because it also indicates to me that you are also QRP.

Those not knowing what 72 means will maybe be tempted to look it up and try some QRP themselves...

Maybe you should send 74 instead. It takes almost one "dash" less power! hi hi

The use of 72 instead of 73 by QRP operators originated with Oleg, RV3GM back 1987. Oleg is thus know as "Mr. 72". He is also credited with the design of a simple rig called the MICRO-80 (published in SPRAT 72, the Autumn 1992 issue) and this little rig is the design that morphed into the PIXIE.

"74" is a good suggestion
However 74 is the sign of another very active QRPp group
https://groups.io/g/qrssknights/topics
74 is also title of our annual news letter

A QRPp Gallon is equal to or less than 0.999 W
We also run QRPpp two orders of magnitude less than...etc... hi HI

I personally use, annd like using 72... Most CW operators know then you are a low power station.
