Re: New ham interested in CW

I have the Northern Lights Radio Club nearby. So I think there must be some folks on it. https://www.nlrs.club/ It's not very portable, but what about a Yaesu 991A? I don't have a base station at all yet. It wouldn't be a POTA rig really, but I have the Venus. There aren't many all band all mode tra...

Re: New ham interested in CW

It’s going ok. My sending is pretty good. I can do 18-20wpm. My copy is still a struggle, I have to focus so intensely and hear things multiple times to get them. Does anyone know of any VHF CW radios out there? I’m not finding much. I guess there is a “weak signal” crowd on VHF, but I can’t find an...

Re: New ham interested in CW

Anyone have experience using 3 or 4 18650 lithium cells in some sort of case? It seems to me that these could be a good QRP option. That's what I used for a while. Easy, inexpensive way to get 3 AH in a small package. Only downside is that Ii didn't use a BMS so I had to take out the batteries to c...

Re: New ham interested in CW

I went with Tufteln 40M QRP EFHW kit, a set of links, plus spare 34' wire and a BNC to make a permanent 20M dipole for my attic.

Just need to choose a power source.

Re: New ham interested in CW

Does anyone shop at Gigaparts or HRO? DX engineering doesn’t sell Bioenno (why?) but their website is so far superior. I can’t find anything on Gigaparts or HRO. Its like trying to use the internet from the 90s. Maybe I’m missing something. Even just trying to find a 25ft BNC cable is impossible. Th...

Re: New ham interested in CW

@skipRD That makes sense. I thought I read that you added something for 30.

There is a Par Endfedz antenna that uses some trickery for the 30M. I don’t know how it works. They say you just need to add an SMA plug to convert it.

Re: New ham interested in CW

There is a trapped, built-in mini tuner design on QRP guys but it looks complicated. I didn't see the schematic for the tuner you're referring to, but the simplest one imHo is here https://pa0fri.home.xs4all.nl/ATU/FRImatch/FRImatcheng.htm if you look at the various builds images you'll see that fo...

Re: New ham interested in CW

The EFHW Kit from KM4ACK is a great option for that reason, all the parts you need are included and it takes maybe an hour to assemble. Make it the day it arrives. [snip, snip] Not a good idea to use a EFHW without a tuner? I've never used a tuner with an EFHW, which is why I used and EFHW with the ...

Re: New ham interested in CW

I ordered the Venus SW-3B. Now working on picking an EFHW kit that is in stock, a battery, and coax.
