Re: New ham interested in CW

The EFHW Kit from KM4ACK is a great option for that reason, all the parts you need are included and it takes maybe an hour to assemble. Make it the day it arrives. [snip, snip] Not a good idea to use a EFHW without a tuner? I've never used a tuner with an EFHW, which is why I used and EFHW with the ...

Re: New ham interested in CW

Either of these brands a good option for 20/40M? Any other brands you recommend? https://www.sparkpluggear.com/shop/p/the-bundle-starter-pack-sdw77 https://www.packtenna.com/store/p25/EFHW-20%2F40_-_End_Fed_Half_Wave_20m_and_40m_Antenna.html#/ Do you use a mast or just find trees and use rope and a...

It's free.

Re: New ham interested in CW

Thanks for responding. [snip, snip] If I get the Venus, do you recommend a multiband antenna for QRPing (K4SWL does this), or should I really get dedicated dipoles? The Venus does 20, 30, and 40M. Either way. I used a typical 40m end-fed half-wave (which gives 40-20-15-and 10 meters) that is 66' lon...

Re: New ham interested in CW

I used a little Venus SW-3B with a little CWMorse key for months before my KX2 came in and it worked just fine. I also used an end-fed half-wave that I built myself, and a homemade battery pack, and those worked fine. When it comes to the equipment side of things, just remember, it's the Indian, not...

CW Morse - N0SA Paddle - For Sale

Based on the initial impressions of Thomas K4SWL and others, I went ahead and purchased one of the CW Morse N0SA-design paddles. Many people love that design, and the paddle is VERY well made with an excellent feel. However, I've decided it's not for me, so I'm going to sell it. It's essentially in ...

Re: EFHW Pole

I use an MFJ-1910 collapsible 33' fiberglass pole. It's real thin at the top, but OK for the end of an EFHW (or the middle of an inverted-v). I think many people go with the sotabeams version, which appears to be even smaller and lighter.

Re: Xiegu G106 vs. FX-4L

As I'm sure you know, the initial reviews of the G106 were terrible and at least through firmware v.1.1 (now up to v.1.2, I think) didn't seem to be getting much better. And there seemed to be all the issues that plague other Xiegu radios (poor front end, splatter on xmit, etc.). All of which is why...

Re: EFHW

Same answer as Brian K3ES. I have checked it several times since I built it a couple years ago, including most recently when I added a link for 30m, but it's always been good enough (less than 1.8) and don't worry about it in the field. However, if you're finicky, note that an EFHW might not have th...

Re: 9:1 Home Brewing

So, I've only built a couple 9:1's, so I'm certainly not an expert. But, the ones I've built have worked, so FWIW ... 1. The wire I used to wrap the toroid (a 240-43) was a bit thick (maybe 14-gauge?) to twist all three strands together and then wrap the toroid. However, I have seen bifilar 9:1's ma...
