Re: Xiegu G106 vs. FX-4L

I'd be careful about the G-106. While I agree about not relying on the reviews of certain YouTube "personalities," this month's evaluation of the G-106 in QST was pretty bad. QST always tries to point out some positive features and to avoid being overly negative, but the G-106 did not fare...

Re: Should I sell this FT-817?

The FT-817/818 are, by many objective measures, sub-standard radios. Meager power on the internal battery, no tuner, no sound card, bad display, etc.. etc. etc. BUT, they also have attracted a cult-like following, and they generate an incredible amount of enthusiasm among owners. I personally witnes...

Re: New ham interested in CW

Anyone have experience using 3 or 4 18650 lithium cells in some sort of case? It seems to me that these could be a good QRP option. That's what I used for a while. Easy, inexpensive way to get 3 AH in a small package. Only downside is that Ii didn't use a BMS so I had to take out the batteries to c...

Re: New ham interested in CW

Skip, Care to share the details if your 40-30-20m end fed? Was interested on the par end fedz model but not obtainable here in the UK. Richard M0RGM I carry along with me at all times the KM6ACK version (here: https://km4ack.square.site/product/49-1-efhw-antenna-kit/34?cs=true&cst=custom ). The...

Re: New ham interested in CW

@skipRD That makes sense. I thought I read that you added something for 30. There is a Par Endfedz antenna that uses some trickery for the 30M. I don’t know how it works. They say you just need to add an SMA plug to convert it. http://www.vibroplex.com/contents/en-us/p3411.html A friend has that an...

Re: New ham interested in CW

(snip, snip) So does the 30M section in your design add more wire? There is a trapped, built-in mini tuner design on QRP guys but it looks complicated. No, 30m is shorter than 40m, so one doesn't "add" wire; there's just a link at around 50' on a 66' antenna (roughly). The 66' antenna is ...

Re: What I am supposed to do with the US State?

Ditto what Howard said. I also use the state as a quick check that I've copied the call correctly (it's not 100%, but sometimes it's a tip-off that I got a letter wrong). For example, some guy's call will show up in New York, but he'll send Florida. I just do a quick follow up to make sure he's actu...

Re: Earbuds for QRP CW Portable Operation

I agree with Rick. I use cheapos (like $10 Walmart earbuds) in my KX2 (and my SW3B before that) and they work fine for CW.

One other thought. Some earbuds come with a mic, which means they have a TRRS plug. I'm not sure if plugging a TRRS plug into a radio's TRS audio jack matters.

Re: Hi I'm new - some QRP questions

Wiggins -- the response by Douglas above all look good, so just a couple extra thoughts. First, I see you're in Atlanta. So am I, and if you want to team up for some QRP POTA activations, let me know and we'll meet up. The Chattahoochee River NRA has several good locations and I've activated there a...

Re: New ham interested in CW

[snip, snip] If I get a tuner, which one would you suggest? I've used two. One was an MFJ-9201 QRP Tuner, which is a small, simple, manual tuner. It's a bit of a pain to set up initially because it doesn't have a built-in SWR meter, so I had to hook it up to an antenna analyzer, get the Inductance/A...
