Re: The perfect POTA/SOTA rig

I think the ideal radio is one that has everything included in the case - radio, ATU and power. My KX1 fits that description, albeit only on 3 bands and only in CW. Having said that, I find enjoyment in the less than ideal - what can I do with things I built myself, or the most minimal setup possibl...

Re: Favorite portable antenna

I'm a big fan of end-fed antennas - they're cheap, easy to deploy and versatile. I've made several EFHW antennas including a couple with traps that work great without a tuner. I'm currently using a 35.5 ft EFRW with a tuner as my "primary" antenna. The most amazing contact with it was with...

Re: Best beginner CW transceiver kit to start with

For those of us who were on the air in the early 1980s, the name woodpecker brings back bad memories! The Soviet OTH RADAR really made a mess of the bands.

Re: Paddle for KX2

I prefer single lever paddles too. This K6ARK 3D printed paddle is great - I have one for each radio:

It isn't quite as nice as my vibrokeyer, but it is a lot more portable!

Re: SW-3B and Straight Key

Why not just use a stereo plug where you have soldered the ring and sleeve together? Maybe mark it with red tape or something so you don't plug it in to a different radio?

Re: Best beginner CW transceiver kit to start with

I just built a (tr)uSDX, and I would have to say that it was one of the fastest radios to build that I have seen. Most of the parts are surface mounted already, so construction consists mostly of installing the display and controls on the top board, and winding and installing toroids on the bottom b...

Re: Portable 10M Yagi ?

Andrew, How would you go about constructing the jungle job? For 28MHz, you'd need about a 16 foot reflector. Do you make it out of aluminum pipe or PVC with wire inside (or outside)? To me, it sounds a lot more difficult than a Moxon with a 3D printed hub - maybe because I've already printed the hub...

Re: HRWBOTA

I heard Thomas for about a minute on 14.040, but he jumped to 14.322 and I could barely hear him already, and I didn't feel like retuning my magloop. I wonder if I could get SWL credit!

Re: Portable 10M Yagi ?

I'm most of the way done building a Moxon (basically a folder 2el yagi) based on this article: https://www.jpole-antenna.com/2023/09/27/ive-been-bit-by-the-black-widow-a-15-meter-moxon-antenna-project/ I bought poles that were a little longer, in case I want to try using it on 17m, but you could als...

Re: Vertical antennas, an interesting discussion

A tribander on a 100 foot tower will outperform just about anything, but it's really hard to fit one in my backpack. I think the same thing applies here - a 1/4 vertical is probably easier to carry and set up than a 5/8 vertical, so even if it may technically have better performance it loses in the ...
