13 Colonies

Post by N8TGQ »

Anyone doing the 13 Colonies special event using QRP?

http://13colonies.us/

I usually work 7 or 8 of them every year. Things are lining up that I can put a real effort in this weekend.

I hope you all have a great 4th of July!

I just noticed the 13 colonies; got my first one yesterday during a pota activation without realizing what it was. Read about it this morning, picked a couple more on purpose. In the field with QMX, at home with K2 dialed down to 5w: all QRP.

But those are some ugly pile-ups!

It's been a challenge, but for the past two years
I've successfully made clean sweeps of the event operating CW at 5 Watts.

I managed to do so also running 5 watts with a wire antenna. I had to use all of my knowledge, skill, tricks, and persistence to pull it off. Use spotting and Hamalert. Study the operator's cadence to time your call. Tune off frequency to distinguish your call from the pile-up. Keep at it!
