My good ham friend KR8P recently got the Elecraft AH1 and wanted to take it pedestrian mobile and asked if I would listen for him on 20 meters. I had a 559 copy on him from MI to me in EPA. I started thinking, hey, I might be able to use my FX-4CR and do the same thing. So I brainstormed and came up with my AX-2 Elecraft 20 meter whip and counterpoise and quickly connected it to an alligator clip and went out in my back yard. I gave KR8P a call not expecting an answer, and lo and behold he replied! We ere both pedestrian mobile.
That occurred two weeks ago. Since then I've been plotting doing a complete POTA activation and how I could improve on the set up. A local ham friend had given me the K6ARK CW key that directly plugs into the radio. Perfect! I put the Bioenno battery in my pocket, the radio PTT for phone can be configured, so no external mic is necessary, and the K6ARK key is attached to the radio so I can hold the radio in the left hand and still have a free hand for logging or adjusting the radio. So I embarked on an activation at US-4567 in PA along the Susquehanna River. Needless to say I'm hooked on pedestrian mobile now, and can get exercise and still enjoy the hobby. I made a video of the activation on Sunday if anyone is interested in seeing the results if it was successful or not.
