Greetings from SE Virginia

Post by W4MGL »

Hello all,

Just a quick introduction. My name is Marc G. Lamb, call sign W4MGL. I was first licensed as KN4JHP in November of 2017 and upgraded to General class in February of 2018. I acquired the vanity call W4MGL in March of 2019. I am turning 65 this July (swamped with Medicare documents and offers - yikes!) and am retired. I worked most of my career in IT, as a systems administrator and network engineer, lastly in Charlottesville, VA. When my long-time employer was bought out and shut down in 2003, I decided that a career change was in order. After a year and a half of factory training in Orlando, FL (four hurricanes during the time I was there!), I began my second career as a Harley-Davidson technician back in my home state of New Hampshire. After 10 years at two different dealerships, I retired as a master technician in 2005. in 2011, we moved back to VA to be close to my wife's ailing parents. We ended up in Chesapeake (FM16ur) where we continue to reside. We are roughly equidistant south of Norfolk and west of Virginia Beach. We have the Great Dismal Swamp just a few minutes drive away.

My primary amateur radio interest has always been HF QRP. I am in the process of learning CW, and I can see this as being my primary mode of operating once I become acceptably proficient. My current rigs consist of:
  • Elecraft KX3 (with PX3 pan adapter and KXPA100 amplifier for SSB)
  • Elecraft KH1
  • LNR Precision Mountain Topper MTR-4B V2
  • LNR Precision Mountain Topper MTR-3B V4 Currahee (just ordered yesterday!)
  • Kenwood TH-D75 VHF/UHF HT
  • Yaesu VX-8DR VHF/UHF HT
  • Yaesu FT-950 HF+6M QRO
  • Yaesu FT-710 HF+6M QRO
  • Kenwood TS-940S HF QRO
I've owned a number of other rigs, and currently own a pretty decent collection of modern and vacuum tube based test equipment plus a pretty good collection of guitars and other more more obscure instruments. Much more info and pictures available on my QRZ page.
