you may try loading the vertical with a cap hat

I'll give it a try. I just have to figure out how to make an ultra-lightweight hat that won't make the antenna too top heavy!

the variable inductor ... are two coils, one slides inside the other, the capacitor across the coils is... a copper pipe with coils inserted, you may redraw the circuit if you like ;)
