qrp radio selection

Post by danboo »

Hi name here is Dan kc8ch and I am starting to enter the QRP world. Would like a 10/20 watt ssb/cw transceiver and so far I have not found one. Would like small one for field work - not expensive $500 or less (in the style of Mountain Topper.) Thank you for your help!

Hi, Dan,

You've got a tall order for a short radio there! :)

So there are lots of QRP transceivers out there, but in the $500-600, very few with 10+ watts output.

Two do come to mind:

- The Xiegu G90 is larger and heavier than a Mountain Topper. It does pack a lot for the price, though. Here's my review: https://swling.com/blog/2020/09/a-revie ... ansceiver/

- The FX-4C is closer to that Mountain Topper handheld size (still chunkier, though!). I believe it might be able to push as much as 10W. It's closer to the $600 mark. Can do both CW and SSB. I'll likely review this radio later this year. You might, however, check out this video: https://youtu.be/sPL5eMqU6gc

Perhaps someone else can chime in with another idea? Of course, there are loads of used transceivers on the market and you might be able to get a good deal, but these days even used prices are quite high.

Cheers & 73,
Thomas
